Terms and rights

The short version: what you write stays yours, the pictures belong to the studios that made them, and anything here comes down on request.

Who runs this site

BigRanks is run by one private person, not a company. Until a postal address is published here, the way to reach whoever runs it is the feedback form, which is read by a person. Write to [email protected] for anything legal or formal.

What you write stays your own

Your ratings, your reviews and your takes are your own work and remain yours. By posting them here you allow BigRanks to show them on the site and in its feeds, in the languages the site speaks, for as long as your account exists. That permission ends when you delete the content or the account: deleted writing stops being shown.

Two things survive a deletion, and both are numbers rather than words: an aggregate somebody else's page has already counted, and the anonymised moderation record. Neither carries your name.

The rules, in one paragraph

One account per person. Rate what you have actually seen, played or read. Do not post other people's work as your own, do not post anything illegal, and do not organise votes. Accounts that break this lose the right to count towards anything, which is the only punishment this site has and the one that matters. How moderation works explains the rest.

Posters, covers and other artwork

This is the part worth reading properly. Posters, cover art, screenshots and trailers stay the property of their rights holders: the studios, publishers and distributors who made them. BigRanks does not claim ownership of any of it, holds no exclusive licence to it, and does not sell it or license it onward.

They are shown here for one purpose: so that a reader can recognise which film, series or game an entry is about. A cover next to a title in a list is identification, not decoration, and the site uses no more of the work than that purpose needs. Nothing is re-hosted for its own sake and nothing is offered as a download.

Where each image comes from is printed next to it, and where the picture has a page of its own the credit links to it, which for Wikimedia Commons is the page naming the author and the licence. Anime and manga covers come from AniList. Game covers come from Steam and from IGDB. Series artwork comes from TVmaze, whose own terms permit it on condition that they are credited, which is what the line beside each image does. Film posters come from fanart.tv, on a project key whose terms require that its users are told so, which this line does. Film and series artwork also comes from Wikimedia Commons, and from TMDB where it is used, in which case this product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB. Photographs of people come from Wikimedia Commons, which accepts only images that are free to reuse. Written descriptions are adapted from Wikipedia under CC BY-SA 4.0, and the article each one came from is linked on the page.

Those databases pass on what their own contributors uploaded and, like this site, do not claim to own the artwork either. So this page makes no claim that anybody granted a licence to it. The position is the plain one: nothing here is claimed, everything is credited, and anything comes down on request.

Having something removed

If you hold the rights to something shown here and would rather it were not, say so and it goes. No argument, no form to escalate, no waiting for a legal department, because there is not one. Use the report form, name the page and the image, and it is taken down.

The same route handles anything unlawful: content that infringes, defames or breaks the law where you live. Say what is wrong with it and where you are, because both change which law applies.

What this site does not promise

BigRanks is offered as it is, free, by a person paying for the server out of their own pocket. It can go down, lose data or close. Release dates, cast lists and descriptions are collected from public databases and are wrong often enough that they should not be relied on for anything that matters. The ratings are opinions of the people who left them and nothing more.

Changes, and which version counts

These terms change when the site does, and the current version is always the one on this page. This document is written in English and translated into the other languages the site speaks as a courtesy; where a translation and the English differ, the English text is the one that governs.
